Staging

Staging

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 31, 2021

A depression of mind

charms the emperor’s palace

Children play, hats and

holes in shoes,

investing wholly until exhausting

themselves body sore and

days between baths

Walk carefully, the

marble paths to the

cathedral are slippery

In their shine, the

snake-eyed reflection

The gold organ pipes writhe

and their music burrows

pockets empty

Hither and Fro

 Hither and Fro

poem by e.e.cane

Jan 30, 2021

Carry hither and fro

regal thoughts-a-fallin,

world-moving detritus from a

head shaken

Rich ideas spreading as

blood under the warm sun—

freed of cape and crown,

the wealthy arrogance now

drying as nettle and bone for

the wind to pick up

The good ideas were the harbinger

The canteen to preserve, protect,

fell away as the earth to the

flapping of leathery wing and

nightmare lashing of tongue

My Little Friend

 My Little Friend

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 29, 2021

Why, it's my little friend

doubtless, startled by my courage

Such things have been known to happen

Your suspicious eyes tell me I have a ways to go

before acceptance

But I would think congratulations in order for my

exceptional betrayal of shyness

After all, you said the awkward goodbye amid stomach aches

and wretched nervousness

I should think you would welcome the release

I have to say goodbye

Though I relish your strength to get this far without me,

I also detest you

I shall not return

This disease of excessive self-consciousness is

a betrayal of the rest of you,

and there’s too much the world needs to see of that part

for you to seduce me any longer

Tomorrow...

 Tomorrow...

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 28, 2021

swelling thought

maybe tomorrow buries itself

comfortably between modesty

and screaming incoherently

Indeed, whenever I express meekness,

barbarism follows

When offensively brilliant—conciliatory mocking

I find intolerance can’t wait, so I do,

quietly nestled and keeping my mouth shut

waiting for the next day

and the next

and the next...

Ode

 Ode

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 27, 2021

awake

shadow’s loom

weave daydream and

hasten my night-wandering,

wishing, laughing, brawling tenderness

and torture of truth

That I breathed,  brimming measure against

the creep of still and spiritlessness,

burn brighter in my insensible domain,

my ode, life

Peasants

 Peasants

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 26, 2021

lips, sea-swell impertinent

whispers folly, proves I’ll listen

Forgetting myself, eyes dry

from watching, freedom is elusive while

in her presence

Feelings, thin peasants crowding,

rise sharply to protest my abstinence

Methinks they protest too much

Status

 Status

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 25, 2021

God-favored status

—who wouldn’t listen?

Being ridden by the

pontiff tiara-wearing self-appointed

is simply a reflection of human design

Leadership, control-stirring their

kettle of sorrows until fear bubbles up,

bottling that under pressure—surely to fizz

when opened, but by then

the money has already changed hands

The pious allow just enough knowledge,

but not enough to overcome

the fear they instill

The awakening crowd finds themselves

lost with nothing to replace their ignorance

They quickly seek and accept the

first plausible from someone who’s pontiff

hat is just being fitted

The Remembering Poem

The Remembering Poem

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 24, 2021

Under clouds lamenting

mouths distended, time dying,

animal blessings and fresh baptisms

God rests musing,

little bony children always behind

their dreams—easily enthralled

with their own dishonesty

Behold, the still Mother fearing each hereafter and

youth defiant without meaning

She knows the butterfly will remember

its flowers, should any survive,

and her children will forget their crushing footfalls

and brief cycle to apehood

In solitude, liberty

But soon, humanity’s children gather,

summer having shed it’s sting

Goodmother, eyeworn, closes them briefly,

stars gleam

Their sparkle of forever teases the

remembering poem, should any

be watching,

dreaming

beneath an unclouded sky

Witness

 Witness

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 23, 2021

Never still,

can't speak clearly with

all the movement

Once saw October awakening,

cool assurance piqued

through stillness and breeze

Three broken branches argued

on the way down, lay concealed beneath

leaves for all their chatter

Perhaps silence is a good thing

Allows focus on sweet memories,

deep enough for pride

When there breathes purity,

silence settles unseen,

unsaid

A witness bore me safely through my own chatter

that I have my awakening,

my assurance that I was here for these things

though I spoke of them not

So Obvious

 So Obvious

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 22, 2021

She looked happiest ever

in this place;

one moment distinct

Inside, we live comfortably,

our hands draw near, not sober

—likely to protect as blindly fumble

In silence so obvious

it will endure

I shall remain ever present

and you caressed

Concrete Over Fern

 Concrete Over Fern

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 21, 2021

Wood and string

decay

Boat timber cracking,

sails tearing free in

the wild wind

The hurricane spirals unto itself; the roaring circus pinwheel

—meme splatter

Civilization is buried in

the dusty earth

...and they were on the easiest level

Come Away

 Come Away

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 20, 2021

Even those you believe

strive against culture

sometimes conceal themselves

between assimilation and shame

for servicing silence in conformity

—the unutterable poetry of attachment

Come away, stern songbird, before

autumn leaves you the

barest of trees

Tomb

Tomb

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 19, 2021

Speak low, sepulchral stones,

your rolling sound gathers

clouds splitting

Lightning cleave their bright cruelty

Hark! The ancient hours unshadowed

Shuddering, I lie stricken

as horror reigns

Beauty of Now

 Beauty of Now

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 18, 2021

Since I've forgotten reality,

dreams,

there is no pain

This moment speaks

deeply

now

Suddenly, flush-fallen inadequacy

is merely innocent seasoning

over our countless selves

We’ve been too hard-faced,

using our parent’s memories

before we wandered,

as must we do

The outstretching and

afar we’ve come,

brittle through war breaking,

tannin and god-free,

lost waiting

waiting

All hope bleeds gradually

Sometimes things appear clean,

naked within

Never forget

our inner poor,

there grows joy with bitterness,

but for memory

Natheless, forget,

remembering ages the beauty of now

Heaven’s Best

 Heaven’s Best

poem by e.e.cane

Jan 17, 2021

Their spirits knew

only found strength as

conquerors, earthly king’s causes

None of them were kings

Floundering, scrabbling, posturing

   ego-seasoned hens before the brine

Oh, fierce hens, yes,

but their heaven is silent

Harps plucked to bloody fingers rest

An angel’s cold eyes shine watching; the war-bred knowing,

readying shields full-armed

Separate the spirit, tear the Divine seal

The dogwar upon ye virginwise,

thy music never to sound

against heaven’s best

Trust You

 Trust You

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 16, 2021

I’d trust you, but you

have too much power over me

The only thing saving me

  so far

is that you’re not aware of it—

the dreams raging,

waking decades of fire

swirl round your eyes,

the hairline of your neck,

to inhale fully

I remember...wildness

nerves suffused

unstrung

—the lyre plucked, and I dance

Yes....

far too much power

I’m sorry,

it is me I don’t trust

Watching

 Watching

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 15, 2021

everything else has stopped

There is nothing but the slightest sound

outside

just outside

All the waiting is for that

I don’t move from my position

I can see it all from here, and

I am the protector

If I move or leave, she gets killed

I’m 13 and time has stopped

except for the sounds,

every little sound that says

he’s back, and he’s come to hurt us

I don’t think about me for some reason

Yes, he’ll hurt me, too, but I’m not

afraid for that. Numb. Nothing can

hurt me

But the sound...every little

sound causes me to jump as if

I’ve been stabbed with electricity

I’m alive, but only in my eyes

and ears

I don’t think I’m breathing

Watch the road. He’ll come in the car

and that will be it. I have to watch...

I hid the shotgun close by

I’ll get it again, he won’t do his animal,

unthinking nature

Not while I live

Not while I watch

I was 13...

a part of me

is still watching

Never

 Never

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 14, 2021

never is suspended

validates grief

That's just bullshit finery

—it’s o'er before review,

just “never”

Well, you can take time

and spread it thin as you like

but “whatever” checks you,

sometimes damn well

A suicide sweat fumes in “never”

“whatever” affirms eternity

and doesn’t bitch about it

Unrest

 Unrest

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 13, 2021

poor kind eyes

who loved alone

she knew neither first-hand

nor my dreaming anticipation

still, unrestful herself,

she wears it well

To The Timid

To The Timid

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 12, 2021

with joy

—impetuous fire

snow blush'd cheeks

my crimson splendor

merciless

some comfort hearing

you say “yes”

Skysplash

 Skysplash

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 11, 2021

flower-soft lute,

thin frost wind

searching eye-to-eye

for tommorrow-thought,

but memories of dreams

washed in tears

it's there, though,

every song,

the kiss and dance of

just because

Nature waiting weaves

yesterday’s chain

waiting

waiting

beneath thundering wave

and reef

the crashing starlight splay,

the ready skysplash

breath-suspence

tingling

pass, weary child,

in all this

too

the whys forgotten with

the blanky

the weight and surity

from monster’s creep

it’s all still there

For A Time

 For A Time

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 10, 2021

where have they gathered?

hope lingers like

fragrance after footsteps

freedom steadily sweet

fading

came across america

imprisoned by fortune

many colors bold, shining,

the success of innocence

and happy-speak

it's pink now

the mist of forgetfullness

and betrayal

skin exploding new standards

this is the way

humanity lurches

cries and,

for a time,

remembers

Unstartled

 Unstartled

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 9, 2021

I shall live unstartled

because life had pass'd

between the tears falling

There never lived

smiles between farewells,

and handfuls of

time is hair through fingers

—what’s startling about that?

The butterfies are gone and

drying tears bedew only memory

Click

 Click

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 8, 2021

Click the shutter,

the view-master turns

as a cool chill

raises the skin

Raccoons in coats

and bow ties,

the fur party

—party of animals—

claws, so shoes won’t fit,

scratch the trail

The air is clear

The trees bare

The wind carries their threat

of that which cannot stand

it’s own nature

In This Place

 In This Place

poem by e.e.cane

Jan. 7, 2021

in this place

wondrous visions

and song

Across america

the screaming swept

such music aside

by anger boiling blood

It shall pass examination to reveal

someone behind the

blind

The unseeing empassioned

carry elephants,

shared transgressions,

to sell guns with fantasy

Fear clogs words and thinking

of the evil beast bleating

and hearing only the sound

of their own voices
