Hither and Fro
poem by e.e.cane

Carry hither and fro
regal thoughts-a-fallin,
world-moving detritus from a
head shaken
Rich ideas spreading as
blood under the warm sun—
freed of cape and crown,
the wealthy arrogance now
drying as nettle and bone for
the wind to pick up
The good ideas were the harbinger
The canteen to preserve, protect,
fell away as the earth to the
flapping of leathery wing and
nightmare lashing of tongue
